“Significant efforts” were made in an attempt to save flights to the sunshine island Lanzarote from City of Derry Airport, according to the airport’s management.
The airport was advised yesterday by Falcon Holidays and its sister companies, Thomson and First Choice, that they were amending their summer 2014 programme from Derry and, following a review of their programme, had decided to cancel the Lanzarote flight from the Eglinton airport this summer.
Management at the airport said they appreciated passengers would be disappointed by the decision from the tour operators but “significant efforts” were made to save the route, however “commercial reasons” meant that it simply was not possible to retain it.
A spokesperson added: “We are obviously disappointed at this decision but we fully understand the commercial realities affecting the holiday marketplace.
“We will continue to work with Falcon Holidays and others to further develop our summer sun products.”
The spokesperson said passengers still had a range of summer sun options from City of Derry Airport for this summer with the Falcon service to Majorca and the Ryanair services to Faro and Alicante.
The spokesperson added: “Please visit the airport’s website for further details. Log on to www.cityofderryairport.com or keep up to date by following us on Facebook and Twitter.”
Meanwhile, customers booked to travel to Lanzarote from City of Derry Airport with Falcon, Thomson or First Choice are being advised to contact their booking agent.
For holidays booked directly through the tour operators’ websites, customers should contact the relevant call centre.
This summer customers can still travel with the Falcon/Thomson/First Choice direct from City of Derry to the Balearic Island of Majorca.
There is also the attraction of taking an “Island Escape” cruise from Palma, Majorca.
Passengers can also travel with Ryanair to Faro in the Algarve region of southern Portugal or to Alicante serving Spain’s Costa Blanca coastline.
