One of Derry City Council’s most senior and well-known officials is leaving to take up a new joh.
Strategic director Anthony Tohill is to leave the post to become chief executive of the new Mid Ulster District Council.
The new council is being set up as part of the Review of Public Administration (RPA) and will see the amalgamation of the current Magherafelt, Cookstown, Dungannon and South Tyrone councils.
Mr Tohill (42), from Swatragh in Co Derry, is well-known in sporting circles throughout the country, having been a star member of the historic Derry team that won the All-Ireland senior football title in 1993.
He was also manager of the Ireland team in last year’s International Rules games against Australia.
Meanwhile, interviews are expected to begin shortly for the chief executive of the new “super council” to be formed with the amalgamation of Derry City Council and Strabane District Council under RPA recommendations.
Current chief executive of Derry City Council, Sharon O’Connor, has indicated she will not be applying for the post.
