Donation boxes are to be placed at a number of Derry City Council-run visitor attractions, including the Guildhall.
The follows a pilot scheme in which donation boxes were located at all of the council’s museums, including the Tower Museum.
Generated income will go to running costs with a percentage of the donations going to charities nominated by the city’s mayor.
Council Development Committee members gave the go-ahead for the placing of the donation boxes after hearing that during the pilot scheme it was expected only museums would be the most successful but the Tower Museum, which has an admission fee, “proved to be just as popular.”
Committee member Sinn Fein Cllr Barney O’Hagan said the donation boxes would give visitors to the Guildhall the opportunity to contribute towards the upkeep of the building.
