A woman who acted as a “getaway driver” for her children who stole food from a Derry store on Christmas Eve has been given a suspended jail sentence.
Derry Magistrates Court was told the two youngsters emerged from the Iceland store in the city’s Foyleside Centre with two bags of food on 24 December last year and were seen getting into a Donegal registered Ford Mondeo which then drove off.
The court was told Rose Marie McDonagh was the driver of the vehicle when police traced it to the car park of Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre in the Waterside.
The two children were also in the car and two bags containing £50.40 of “perishable” food were recovered.
The heard court police inquiries discovered McDonagh, whose address on court papers was “no fixed abode,” was a disqualified driver and had been driving without insurance.
Pointing out McDonagh, who appeared via video link from Hydebank Prison, had spent a period of time in prison including of the Christmas period, Deputy District Judge imposed a 12 month suspended jail sentence.
