The weather continues to play havoc with Derry’s preparations for the new Airtricity Premiership race with yet another pre-season game falling foul to the weather.
City’s planned game against a local Derry and District selection, due to take place on Sunday, has been cancelled. It has been re-scheduled to be played on Wednesday next.
With only three weeks to City’s opening clash of the season away to Shamrock Rovers on 7 March, Derry have only have only two games under their belts – and one of those was on Cliftonville’s all-weather surface at Solitude, a game City won 2-0. The other was a comfortable 4-0 win over Institute at Drumahoe.
Last Tuesday’s planned clash with Glentoran at Brandywell was cancelled due to snow while away games at Limavady, Coleraine and Newbuildings were called off due to waterlogged pitches.
Derry have been able to arrange a game with Finn Harps on Monday afternoon in Greysteel with a 3.00pm kick-off.
Derry’s other planned pre-season clash is away to Irish Premier League side Portadown on 1 March with a date yet to confirmed for the re-scheduled Newbuildings game.
A friendly against Glenavon has been provisionally organised with a date and kick off time to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, Finn Harps pre-season friendly with Sligo Rovers scheduled for Finn Park tomorrow afternoon has been re-scheduled to take place tomorrow with a 7.45pm kick-off.
The inclement weather conditions have made Finn Park and The Showgrounds unplayable and the game will now be played on an all-weather pitch in Sligo.
It had been proposed that the sides would meet halfway in Ballyshannon to be on the all-weather pitch used by Erne Wanderers but the FAI wouldn’t sanction it.
Finn Harps will then face the Irish International schoolboys side also managed by Harps manager Horgan on Wednesday and Thursday next week before playing UCD in Monaghan on Saturday.
