Roads Service to carry out a review of road safety at one of Derry’s busiest roundabouts.
The decision to review options for improving the capacity and safety at Caw roundabout follows the disclosure of figures which showed 52 people had been injured in 41 collisions in a three year period in or around the busy junction which connects Foyle Bridge, Clooney Road, Limavady Road and Crescent Link in the Waterside area of the city.
The review has been welcomed by the city’s Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly who had written to the DoE expressing concern at safety issues at the roundabout.
Replying to the Mayor’s letter, Sean Mullan, Roads Service, acting senior traffic manager, revealed the roundabout was investigated a “number of years ago” with a view to installing traffic signals but at the time, consultants advised that “it would not work efficiently.”
Mr Mullan said Roads Service was “very much aware” that traffic using the roundabout “can experience difficulty” in entering the roundabout at peak times.
He added the installation of “spiral markings” and the provision of additional approach lanes had alleviated delays to some extent but with further development planned in the area, Roads Service now proposed to investigate further possible options for improving capacity and safety at this junction.
Mr Mullan added: “At this time there are no firm proposals and any design or construction work is, of course, subject to finance being available.”
