A Strabane community group has been awarded funding to promote cultural diversity and support ethnic communities living in the town.
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland is making £13,262 available to the Strabane Ethnic Community Association, based in Bridge Street in the town, through the Department for Social Development’s Neighbourhood Renewal programme.
Mr McCausland said the funding would support the work of the Strabane Ethnic Community Association to break down barriers and develop good community relations within the town.
The group run English courses for the ethnic community and also run events to introduce local people to the other cultures they share the town with; such as the annual Indian Diwali festival which aims to introduce the local community to Indian culture, art, music and food.
Bozena Rojkowicz, chairperson for the group, said the funding which will allow SECA to continue to provide “front line service delivery” that responded to the needs of ethnic minority communities.
