Funding of £20,000 to repair and make the the World War II jetty at Fort George in Derry “fully operational again” is being provided by the Department of Social Development.
Part of the jetty has been fenced off for the past 18 months having been damaged when a ship collided with it in August 2012.
The repair work will include the replacement of railings and a new navigation light on the jetty.
General maintenance works including power hosing and repainting will also be carried out.
Confirming the funding, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the funding would allow the jetty to become “fully operational again.”
He added: “Riverfront amenities are valuable assets that create a sense of place in any city. The refurbished jetty will complement the pedestrian and cycle paths running alongside the river and provide another focal point for both visitors and local people.”
Works have commenced and are expected to be completed by the end next month.
In April last year, the Department of Social Development re-assumed full responsibility for the management and redevelopment of the 15 acre Fort George site in its ownership following agreement that Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) would act as the single sponsor Department for Ilex.
