The PSNI are to put additional resources into tackling car crime in the Greater Shantallow area.
The move, which takes in the area from Sandbank to Ballyarnett, has been welcomed by Sandra Duffy, Sinn Fein candidate in the upcoming government election.
Ms Duffy said there had been an upsurge in car crime across a wide area from Sandbank as far out as Ballyarnett which included cars being broken into, items stolen and attempts made to steal cars.
She revealed she also had received complaints from residents living in the Beragh Hill Road and Lenamore Road areas about cars racing along these roads late at night and “doing donuts” in the middle of the road.
She added: “It can be a very frightening experience for any motorist getting caught up with death drivers on a country road late at night. Those involved in this criminal activity care little for the victims left behind.”
“I have been speaking to the PSNI and they assured me that they are putting additional resources into the area to tackle car crime.”
Ms Duffy concluded: “I would urge anyone who sees people acting suspiciously around vehicles or driving recklessly to contact the police straight away.”
