Trojans Football Club’s Raymond Carton was honoured at last night’s Derry District Sports Awards held in the City Hotel.
Organised by Derry City Council and sponsored by Hughes Insurance, the awards recognise individuals, teams, coaches and officials for the work that they do as well as their success in competition.
Raymond was presented with the “Services to Sport” accolade for a lifetime’s dedication to the Creggan-based club.
It is his second prestigious accolade within the past eight months, having been presented with the Derry Sports Volunteer Award in June last year.
The Creggan man has been to the forefront of community football in Derry for almost 40 years and has dedicated many hours to the running of the club.
During his time at Trojans, Raymond, recognised as one of Derry’s most talented goalkeepers during his time Long Tower Youth Club, has undertook all kinds of tasks including coaching, transport, washing football kits and fundraising.
Among the top players to emerge from Trojans during Raymond’s time have been current Wigan Athletic and Republic of Ireland star James McClean, current Derry City goalkeeper Gerard Doherty, former City captain Kevin Deery and ex-Brandywell players Darren Kelly and Owen Morrison.
