The Police Federation for Northern Ireland (PFNI) has commended the police officer who used CS spray to arrest a 14 year old schoolboy.
Last week, Police Ombudsman Dr Michael Maguire released the findings of an investigation into the incident which occurred at Oakgrove Integrated College on 7 January this year.
Dr Maguire’s report found that the action taken by the PSNI sergeant was necessary and that he had no alternative.
Police had been called to the Gransha school to deal with the aggressive student who had put his fist through a window.
Pointing out the pupil involved was not questioning the judgement of the officer, and his parents said they fully understood the action that was taken, the PFNI described the incident as “unfortunate” and the Police Ombudsman’s investigation had been “prompt.”
The PFNI said: “This was a prompt investigation into an unfortunate incident in a school where an officer was pushed and threatened by a boy in a very aggressive state.
“The officer’s response was proportionate, measured and correct and he is to be commended for his attempts to calm the agitated student. This was a first-class piece of policing where the reactions of an officer helped to resolve a difficult situation.”
The PFNI represents Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers inclusive of all ranks from constable to Chief Inspector as well as over 500 part-time officers.
