Detectives investigating the Real IRA murder of Kieran Doherty in Derry have issued a renewed appeal for information on the fourth anniversary of his death.
The 31-year-old was found shot dead on the Braehead Road on the outskirts of the city on the evening of 24 February 2010.
The Real IRA admitted the killing and claimed Mr Doherty was a member of the organisation alleging he had admitted his involvement in a €500,000 cannabis factory uncovered by gardai in Donegal.
The Real IRA said the father of one had denied working for MI5 but they believed MI5 had played some role in the drugs factory to “blacken the IRA’s name and link us to the drugs trade which we abhor.”
HIs family have strenuously denied he was involved in the drugs trade and have called for an inquiry into allegations MI5 agents had been trying to recruit him as an informer.
Renewing a police appeal for information four years after the killing, Detectives say they still need assistance and information from the community to make progress.
Police have carried out a number of searches and made three arrests but so far no one has been charged with the murder.
A spokesperson for the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch said: “This investigation remains open four years after this horrific murder. The investigation would make more progress if those individuals who know what happened to Kieran, and who killed him, would talk to us.
“Kieran had been in the family home at Coshowen until about 8.00pm on the Wednesday evening of 24 February when he went out. The next sighting of Kieran was when a passer-by found his body on the Braehead Road around 10.40pm.
“We want to speak to anyone who was on that road anytime from 8pm that evening and saw anything suspicious or who knows of Kieran’s movements after he left his home.
“There has been speculation about Kieran’s death but police need evidence to bring charges and get justice for Kieran and his family. Information from the community, not speculation, will help police to build an evidential case.”
The spokesperson said anyone with information on what happened to Kieran Doherty is asked to contact detectives at Maydown 0845 600 8000.
Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
