Northern Ireland Electricity has been called on to carry out a review on electricity junction boxes in the Carnhill area of Derry following a power failure in the area at the weekend.
The call comes from Sinn Fein Cllr Tony Hassan who spoke to engineers who were responding the cut in electricity which left around 30 homes without power on Saturday night.
Cllr Hassan said: “It wasn’t an ideal situation on Saturday night to have homes without power. I met engineers at the scene and I was told the cause of the power cut was due to a damaged cable that exploded in the junction box. Local residents told me several of them heard a loud bang around 8.00am on Saturday morning.
“Engineers worked hard all day to try and get the electric back on as soon as possible.”
Cllr Hassan concluded: “I would urge NIE to carry out a review of all junction boxes in the area to ensure that the cables are safe to prevent this problem from happening again.”
