Young people aged between nine and 16 years old in Newbuildings have taken part in a unique project to design a mural, as part of a graffiti art project, in partnership with local graffiti artists “Urban Vizulaz.”
The project, the first of its kind at Newbuildings Youth Club, brought creativity, imagination, and a sense of ownership and achievement to all the young people who participated.
The mural captures the interests, sports and recreational activities the young members are involved in within their community and youth club.
This includes sports such as cricket and football and activities and programmes such as the music promise programme, arts and crafts and a dance programme.
Ryan McGee, WesteYouth Worker said: “This is a unique piece of work and captivates all that young people in this community stand for, which is passion, commitment and imagination.”
He concluded; “The project aimed to bring young people together to try something new and innovative – it has certainly worked! All involved deserve a lot of credit and I am very proud of them.”
Donal O’Doherty, Urban Vizualz, said: “We delivered a new bright and bold mural with the young people from the Newbuildings area.
“They were a great bunch and very enthusiastic about the whole process of working on such a large scale mural.”
He concluded: “We as artists had a great time working with them and hope to collaborate on future projects.”
The feedback from the participants has been extremely positive.
One youth club member said: “I have never taken part in graffiti art before and didn’t think I would enjoy it, but I absolutely loved it and can’t wait for the next graffiti art project to happen.”
