Planning approval for 16 independent living units at Gransha Road in Derry has been recommended by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan.
Confirming approval for the scheme, Mr Durkan said it was a “vitally important” project that would provide purpose built, individual supported units of accommodation for patients with mental health problems who were currently living in an institutional setting in the Gransha complex.
Mr Durkan added: “My vision is for the DOE to build a better environment and help provide much needed local services to help some of the most vulnerable in our society. This decision will help do that.”
The announcement has been welcomed by Health Minister Edwin Poots who said the proposed development would provide an opportunity for patients with mental health problems to live more independently whilst benefitting from the continued care of specialist healthcare professionals based at the hospital.
He added: “The site is located within the existing Gransha grounds and will specifically provide individual supported units of accommodation for patients currently living in an institutional setting in the Gransha complex.”
Mr Poots concluded: “The planning approval is also for a common room, staff accommodation, office, allotments, car parking, and landscaping.”
