Maeve McLaughlin, chairperson of the Stormont Health Committee, said she was “disturbed” to hear that over 50% of the abuse allegations at Ralphs Close residential home had been substantiated and that no one came forward to ensure that the safety and dignity of patients was maintained.
The Derry Sinn Fein MLA has welcomed an announcement by Health Minister Edwin Poots that he has instructed his officials to develop a new adult safeguarding policy that would ensure all patients in wards like Ralphs House would have the highest standard of care.
Ms McLaughlin added: “As chair of the Health Committee I will ensure that this policy is scrutinised to make sure that the abuse of patients in Ralph House will never occur again.”
