Young people from the Brandywell area of Derry have attended a road traffic collision re-enactment staged by the PSNI, ambulance and fire services aimed at raising awareness among young drivers of the impact of car crashes.
The event, held at Long Tower Youth Club and presented by the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), is first of a number of similar planned events that will be held across the Derry City Council area over the coming months.
The event was attended by over 100 young adults who also participated in a question and answer session after the enactment.
Cllr Paul Fleming, chairperson of the Derry PCSP said the multi-agency approach was being used to get the road safety message across to young drivers and those learning to drive.
He added: “Unfortunately, road fatalities have increased this year and it is important to educate our young drivers of the risks involved and the potential impact of traffic accidents.”
He concluded: “I am delighted that our partners in the emergency services and the Youth Justice Agency are also participating in these events.”
Kieran Doherty, Station Commander with Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, said he hoped the hard hitting rescue demonstration would make road users think twice when they got behind the wheel about what the consequences could be.
He added: “Unfortunately, we witness first-hand the carnage and devastation all too often on our roads caused by irresponsible road user behaviour such as speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, inattention or drink/drug driving.
“We want everyone to be safe when out and about on our roads and welcome the opportunity to engage with the community through these multi-agency events.”
