A pipe bomb was found during yesterday’s security alert in Derry, police have said.
Army bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion on the device which was found in the Braehead Road area on the outskirts of the city.
A police spokeswoman said: “At this stage it is believed to be a viable, small pipe bomb-type device.”
A number of items were removed for further examination.
It is believed the alert followed reports of suspicious activity in the area.
The Braehead Road and the Letterkenny Road, which were closed for hours, have now reopened.
It caused traffic disruption in the city on Friday afternoon, as heavy goods vehicles were diverted away from the area.
