Derry 3-16 Westmeath 0-12
Derry maintained their impressive start to the new season with an emphatic 13 point win over Westmeath in their National Football League Division One clash at Celtic Park.
Derry bounced back after an early Heslin point for London with goals from O’Boyle and Heron.
Kevin Johnston opted to take a point when in on goal after seven minutes before Doherty set up Lynch for another point.
A Heslin free and a point from play by Kieran Martin reduced the deficit before Mark Lynch converted a free following a foul on Kevin Johnston in the 17th minute.
A great score by Cailean O’Boyle from play and a free from James Kielt extended the Derry lead on a scoreline of 2-05 to 0-03 after 21 minutes.
A move started by Chrissy McKaigue was finished at the other end by Emmett McGuckin to put even more daylight between the sides.
A Ger Egan point for Westmeath was followed by a Mark Lynch point for the home side as Derry remained well on top.
After Enda Lynch saw his fisted effort come back off a post, Mark Lynch should have scored Derry’s third goal but shot narrowly wide.
Points from two Heslin freesTIM reduced the deficit before Kevin Johnston almost scored a third Derry goal on the stroke of half-time.
Playing with a strong breeze in the second half, a score from distance by James Kielt extended the Derry lead a minute after the restart.
Johnston and McGoldrick responded to scores from Heslin and Rogan for a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-08 in after 43 minutes.
Heslin replied to an Enda Lynn point before Sean Leo McGoldrick set up Emmett McGuckin to fist to the net in the 48th minute to put the game firmly in the grip of the home side.
Patsy Bradley replaced Fergal Doherty on the Derry side in the 49th minute and two minutes later an Enda Lynn point made the scoreline 3-12 to 0-09 in favour of the Oak Leaf County.
A Westmeath point when a goal looked a certainty was followed by a Mark Lynch score from a free for a scoreline of 3-13 to 0-10 after 53 minutes.
A double substitution which saw Charlie Kielt and Niall Holly replace James Kielt and Kevin Johnston on the Derry line-up was followed by yet another point from a Heslin free for Monaghan.
Following the introduction of Aaron Kerrigan for Enda Lynn, Ciaran McFaul pointed with his right foot to put Derry 12 in front.
Both sides exchanged points with Sean Leo McGoldrick completing the scoring to see Derry run out convincing winners 3-16 to 0-12.
Derry’s next league game is away to Cork on Sunday next, throw in 12.45pm.
