Those responsible for the pipe bomb found on the outskirts of Derry have been condemned by Sinn Fein in the city.
Army bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion on the device which was found in the Braehead Road area late on Friday afternoon.
It is believed the alert followed reports of suspicious activity in the area.
The Braehead Road and the Letterkenny Road were closed overnight during the alert.
It caused traffic disruption during in the teatime rush hour in the city, as heavy goods vehicles were diverted away from the area.
Sinn Féin election candidate Liam Friel has called for those responsible to cease their activities.
Mr Friel said: “While it is not yet known what group or individual may have been responsible for leaving this device, what is known if it had detonated it could have caused serious injury to anyone in the vicinity.
“I am making it clear to those responsible for leaving this viable pipe bomb that the community does not want this and those behind it need to stop.”
