A Derry primary school is celebrating after winning a highly prestigious song contest.
The talented choir from Holy Family Primary School and Nursery last night put in a stunning performance to win the under-12 Banardo’s UK and Ireland Choir of the Year held in the world famous Barbican Centre in London.
The Ballymagroarty school was the only school choir from the North to be selected to take part in the highly competitive event which involved 18 primary school choirs from England, Scotland and Wales, some of which had previously participated in singing tours of European countries.
Under choir mistress Claire Doherty, the 45 strong choir – drawn from primary 6 and primary 7 pupils – performed two songs for the competition adjudicators – “The Walls Came Tumbling Down” and “Who Will Buy?” from the musical “Oliver.”
The choir has now been invited to sing on the stage of London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Last year, the choir reached the semi finals of the “Songs of Praise” Choir of the Year competition only to lose out to fellow Derry school St. Patrick’s Primary School, Pennyburn.
