SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has expressed his deep sadness at the death of former Derry City Councillor Bill Keys.
Mr Keys, the father of renowned Derry singer Margaret Keys, was a member of the local authority in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Mr Keys died suddenly last night.
Offering his sympathy to Mr Keys wife Margaret and family, Mr Durkan said: “Bill was a man of utmost decency, passionate in his causes, but never prejudiced in his outlook.
“As a public representative and in all his work to encourage enterprise he proved his regard for others and his belief in betterment for our city.
“In some of the worst years of the Troubles and the harsh economic climate of the Thatcher years he pushed a positive economic and civic agenda.
“His role in fostering small business, establishing Euro Centre West, supporting sport and youth work, and promoting community relations and a strong civic agenda through difficult times is well-appreciated.
“Bill was also a warm family man, good company and an active parish worker.”
He concluded: “I offer my sincerest condolences to his wife Mary and family at this very sad time.”
