A new mural will be unveiled at Free Derry Wall at 1.00pm tomorrow to mark the 100th Anniversary of Cumann naBann and their important contribution to Irish history.
The unveiling is one of a number of events to mark International Women’s Day and will be directly followed by the launch of a programme of events for 2014 in the Sinn Féin offices at Ráth Mór.
Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion, who will chair tomorrow’s proceedings, said: “International Women’s Day was first celebrated back in 1911 when women came together worldwide to campaign for better pay, voting rights and an end to discrimination.
“Today, it continues to be celebrated by women everywhere, and has become a global day of recognition of women’s contribution to society celebrating the economic, political, social and cultural achievements of women.
“Everyone agrees that women have come a long way since the first International Women’s Day in 1911, but unfortunately gender inequality is still very much prevalent in Irish society.”
She concluded: “This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Cumann naBann so during this year we will be holding a number of events in Derry to mark its important contribution to the history of Ireland and role of women in making that history.”
