Those behind the overnight pipe bomb attacks in the Waterside area of Derry “terrorised” the entire community, the Foyle branch of the UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party) has said.
Nine people, including a child, escaped injury when devices exploded at two houses in Lapwing Way and Lincoln Court shortly after 1.35am.
Police said they were treating the attacks as “hate crimes.”
UKIP branch chairperson Kyle Thompson and the party’s Waterside representative David Malcolm visited both scenes to speak to local residents.
Mr Thompson said there is no place in “our society today for people to act in this way.”
He added: “They have not only terrorised their victims but also the entire community. To those responsible for these attacks, we in the UKIP condemn them in the strongest possible terms and urge anyone with any information to contact the police or Crimestoppers.”
Mr Malcolm said there could be “no place” for “any violence” which inflicted “terror and hurt” on any community or individual “in this day and age.`’
He added: “Everyone we spoke to this morning has condemned these attacks and we call on those who carried out these acts to wise up and understand that the community wants to move on positively without the stigma that these criminal acts bring to their communities”
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the attacks on to contact them on 0845 600 8000 or anonymously on charity Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
