Government funding totalling £417,491 to Doire Colmcille Gaelic Athletic Association Club in Derry has been confirmed by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland.
The funding will be used for a new multi-purpose sports changing and meeting space complex being built at Lowry’s Lane off the Glen Road which is due to open later this year.
Club chairperson Mark Higgins said the funding would allow residents, young and the elderly to enjoy the opportunities the multi-purpose development would bring.
He added: “This facility is much needed and will meet the needs of many residents living in the Outer West Neighbourhood Renewal area.”
The funding has also been welcomed by Sinn Councillor Barney O’Hagan.
He said: “This is a positive news story for the Rosemount/Glen area my party colleague Maeve McLaughlin has been involved in helping this project for many years.
“It has been a long time in getting to this stage of the Pairc Cholmcille development.
“This new development represents £417,000 investment in the community of the Glen, Rosemount and the Outer West neighbourhood renewal area.
“When work is completed at Pairc Cholmcille it will include a full size pitch, a smaller training area and modern changing facilities.
“The GAA in Derry plays a crucial role in the sporting, educational, cultural and economic life of our community. It provides our young people with an interest in sport, with an enthusiasm for their Gaelic culture, a sense of purpose and national identity
Announcing the funding, Minister McCausland said the investment illustrated his commitment to improving facilities for those living within the Outer West Area of the city.
He added: “This complex will for the first time, give residents of all ages their own sporting facility which will open up opportunities for them to engage with local, county, regional and national clubs.
“It will give the local community the opportunity to become actively involved in programmes such as culture awareness, dance and the delivery of health and well-being programmes including drugs, alcohol and gambling awareness sessions and also promote social and community development opportunities for all residents of all age groups.”
