Alistair Finlay has been appointed interim Deputy Chief Constable of the PSNI.
The Scottish-born officer will replace Judith Gillespie when she retires at the end of this month.
He was appointed as interim deputy chief constable after indicating that he would not apply for the job on a full-time basis as it was felt that any temporary appointee would have had an unfair advantage.
The Policing Board has said it hoped to have a new deputy in place before the end of August.
Mr Finlay joined the PSNI as an assistant chief constable in 2006 from Strathclyde Police and his first two years were spent in the Crime Support Department dealing with legacy issues – public enquiries, inquests and murder review through the Historical Enquiries Team and the Retrospective Murder Review Unit.
He began his policing career with the Strathclyde Police in 1982.
Initially based in the south side of Glasgow, during his 24-year career with the Strathclyde force, he undertook a range of roles in Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and Force Headquarters.
In 2006 he was promoted to Chief Superintendent and took responsibility for the Force Inspectorate prior to his appointment to PSNI in August 2006.
