Derry-owned Big Shu put in a battling performance only to lose out in a thrilling finish in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival this afternoon.
The 3/1 favourite, winner of the race last year – with leading Irish jockey Tommy Carberry on board – was well placed to repeat his victory from last year, but was beaten in the run in by Balthazar King (4/1) who took the race in a photo finish from Any Currency (10/1).
Owner Hugh Duffy, a member of the well known Derry bookie family, said before the race he would wait to see how the horse performed before deciding whether or not to enter him for the Grand National.
Going on today’s performance, we may see the nine-year-old gelding “shu-ing” around Aintree on 5 April next.
