It was a miserable night for City of Derry Rugby Club’s women’s captain Stacey Lee Kennedy as France gained the win to clinch the Women’s Rugby Six Nations Championship for the first time since 2005.
Played in the city of Pau in south west France, the hosts were made to work for their 19-15 win over the title holders.
Tries from Marion Lievre, Elodie Portaries and Shanon Izar put the home side in a comfortable position at the end of the first half but the Irish came storming back in the second period.
Gillian Bourke went over for two tries off rolling mauls, the first of which was the first try France have conceded all tourmament, and the boot of Niamh Briggs brought the women in green right back into it.
But it was not to be in the end and to the delight of the crowd as Les Bleus held on to complete the cleansweep.
