There has been some serious activity this week at the Little Diamonds pre-school group in Claudy where the glitter and glue have been flying as the children get ready for their big appearance at the St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival Parade in Derry on Monday.
The children are part of a 600 strong cast of fairies, leprechauns, giants and Celtic warriors who will be weaving their magic as part of Derry City Council’s annual St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival.
The theme this year is “Music, Myth and Magic” and the parade – which is the highlight in a three day programme of festival events – will feature a whole host of fierce and fantastical creatures from Irish myth and legend.
The tiny tots will be making their debut as a troupe of faery folk, adding a little bit of sparkle to the festivities with fairy dust and glitter by the bucketful.
The group, which is based in the Diamond Centre in Claudy, enjoy taking part in community events when they get the opportunity, especially when it involves arts and crafts, as playgroup leader Mary McCloskey explained.
“When we got the invitation to be part of the carnival we jumped at the chance,” she said. “The children have been working over the past couple of weeks with the North West Carnival Initiative making some amazing props and costumes, and have been loving every minute of it.
“They really enjoy arts and crafts so it’s been great for them to be able to get involved in the whole build up to the parade, not just show up on the day.
“We’re really looking forward now to the big day, and we hope all the parents will take part along with the children. All we need now is a bit of sunshine.”
