The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire has been confirmed in second place at the end of Race 9.1 in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race from Hong Kong to China’s “Sailing City” of Qingdao.
The result places the Derry Clipper in third place in the overall standings with 78 points, five behind leaders OneDLL and 4.9 adrift of second placed Henri Lloyd.
GREAT Britain sits fourth with 74 points, Switzerland fifth with 66 points and Qingdao sixth with 62 points.
The race from Hong Kong had to be restarted following an unscheduled “pit stop” for rigging repairs and run on an elapsed time basis as the boats set off individually as soon as the work was completed.
After verification, GREAT Britain achieved an impressive elapsed time of five days six hours 26 minutes with the Derry entry just over two hours behind whle OneDLL filled third spot with an elapsed time of Derry~Londonderry~Doire while OneDLL finished third a further eight hours behind.
Race 10 begins tomorrow with the fleet setting sail from Qindao Olympic Sailing Centre for the 5,800 trip to San Francisco where the first boats are expected to arrive on 8 April next.
