The Derry Clipper lit up green in China for the St Patrick’s celebrations,

Race 10 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race from Quindao in China to San Francisco in the US has been halted to to thick fog.

With visibility reduced to less than a quarter of a mile, as a safety precaution race director Justin Taylor called a halt to the race instructing the fleet to “motor sail offshore” until the weather conditions improve.

He added: “They will restart racing using the Le Mans procedure.  I expect that this will happen at first light tomorrow morning.

The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire, which joined in the worldwide St Patrick’s celebrations by being lit up green before the start, was among the first three boats to cross the start line.

Race 10 is 5,800 miles long and the first boats are expected to arrive in San Francisco between 8 and 12 April next.

The fleet will then set sail to New York and is due to arrive in Derry to coincide with the with Maritime Homecoming Festival taking place on the banks of the Foyle on 21-29 June.
