Derry’s Paddy McCourt will find out tonight if he has won one of the top awards in English football.
His wonder goal against Middlesboro towards the end of last year is one of five nominated for the Football League’s Mitre Goal of the Year 2013.
The former Derry City favourite, dubbed the “Derry Pele,” dribbled past six players in a mesmerising run which ended with him placing the ball past the Middllesboro keeper in a 3-2 Barnsley win in the Sky Bet Championship in November.
The goal – his first after joining Barnsley from Glasgow Celtic during last summer’s “transfer window” – became an instant hit on the social network site Youtube where it has had over a quarter of a million viewers.
At the time, it was picked out by television football pundits as a possible goal of the season contender – and they may have made the right call!
The goal was voted for by viewers of Sky Television’s “Soccer AM” as one of five finalists at the Football League Awards being held tonight.
The other four contenders are: James Poole (Hartlepool), Franck Moussa (Coventry), Troy Deeney (Watford) and jay Emmanuel-Thomas (Bristol City).
