Derry athlete Scott Rankin celebrated his call up to the Northern Ireland squad for next weekend’s Home Countries Cross Country International in Nottingham by winning the St Patrick’s Day 5k run at Gransha yesterday.
The Foyle Valley runner took the tape ahead of a field of over 100 competitors in a time of 15.21.
He was followed home by City of Derry Spartans duo Declan Reed and Emmett McGinty who took second and third spots respectively with times of 15.29 and 15.34.
Winner of the recent Lifford 5k, Claire McGuigan (Lifford AC) secured victory in the ladies’ race after covering the distance in 18.58.
Current Northern Ireland and Ulster Novice Cross Country champion, Sarah Lindsey (Foyle Valley AC) ran well to take a well-deserved second place in 19.20, just ahead of City of Derry AC’s Jackie McGinley (19.52) in third.
City of Derry Spartan Amy Jackson, who has been included in the women’s under-20 squad for next week’s international in Nottingham, filled fourth spot in a time of 19.59.
