City of Derry Spartan Anne Paul pushed pre-race favourite Hannah Oldroyd all the way to take second spot in the women’s event at the Magherafelt “Classic 10k” road race held yesterday.
Over 150 runners took part in the event hosted by the newly established Magherafelt Harriers.
Pre-race favourite Hannah Oldroyd (Saltaire Striders), who set a new course record of 18.37 at the Ecos parkrun in Ballymena, had to be her best to finish ahead of the Derry runner.
Oldroyd held off the challenge of the Spartan to take the tape in 39.57 with Paul taking the runners-up spot in 40.11.
Springwell Running Club’s Gemma Turley came third, finishing over a minute later in 41.24.
The men’s race was won by North Belfast Harriers Adam Boyd in 33.58 ahead of Sperrin Harriers Aaron Meharg in second (34.56) with Paul Blaney, North Belfast Harriers, taking third place in a time of 35.09.
