The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) has apologised for the lack of overnight “999” in cover in Derry when ten emergency calls were not responded to.
NIAS spokesperson John McPoland said only one ambulance was on duty last night due to staff shortages due a staff taking ill.
Staff from nearby stations had to be called in to help cover emergency call-outs.
Thirty-four emergency calls were received by the NIAS in Derry city between 8.00pm on and 8.00am this morning.
Mr McPoland said: “We apologise to any patient who may have suffered a delay in response to their 999 call.
“We are always concerned when we can’t provide the cover we want to, but we couldn’t do anything about it.”
