POLICE KEEP “OPEN MIND” TO MOTIVE BEHIND PIPE BOMB ATTACK

A-Police-cordon-158250Police are keeping an “open mind” to the motive behind and overnight pipe bomb attack on a house in Co. Derry.

Three children and two adults escaped injury when the device exploded at a house in the Castle Park in Tobermore at 12.50am.

The windows of the house were destroyed and shrapnel struck a house at nearby Calmore Park.

The Calmore Park house was also occupied at the time.

Chief Inspector Sam Donaldson, the Magherafelt Area Commander, said police did not believe the incident was connected to others recently in Tobermore and they were keeping an “open mind” as to the motivation.

He added: “I totally condemn this reckless attack. This is a quiet rural village and two households have been seriously disrupted.

“Shrapnel from the device or the actual explosion could have killed anyone in the vicinity.

“Detectives have carried out house-to-house enquiries and the remains of the device have been taken for forensic analysis.”

CI Donaldson appealed to anyone with information to tell police.

He said: “If you saw anything suspicious between 12.30am and 1am in the Tobermore area, please contact detectives in Magherafelt on 0845 600 8000 or your local neighbourhood officer. Information can also be given to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”
