A gun attack at a house in the Creggan area of Derry in which a shot was fired through a window of a house has been condemned as “reckless” by Emmet Foyle, SDLP election candidate for the Moor ward.
Mr Doyle said residents in the area were “concerned” about the incident which occurred at a house in Melmore Gardens in the early hours of this morning.
Police revealed strike marks were found on an inside wall and part of a bullet was also recovered.
Officers had been called to the area after neighbour reported hearing a loud bang at around 1.00am.
The house was not occupied at the time.
Mr Doyle said: “I utterly condemn this type of reckless action, and residents are rightly concerned.
“Thankfully, no one was hurt in the incident, but it could have been a very different scenario had the house been occupied at the time.
“Someone could have been seriously injured or worse.”
Mr Doyle concluded: “I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about the incident to contact police immediately because we cannot have gunmen roaming the streets of Derry targeting homes. It’s not acceptable.”
Meanwhile, police have appealed to anyone who was in the area at time or had any information which may assist them with their enquiries to contact them at Strand Road, telephone 0845 600 8000.
A PSNI spokespersons said information could also be passed anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
