An investigation has been called for into an incident in Derry in which two female police officers lifted what appeared to be a drunk woman from the middle of the road, lay her at the side of the roadway and then left her lying.
Video footage of the shocking incident, which occurred in John Street in the city, has been posted on social media.
The footage shows three uninformed PSNI officers get out of an unmarked police car.
While the male driver of the car stands by the driver’s door, two female officers lift the woman from the road and lay her by the side of the roadway in an area clearly marked for buses, before all three get back into their vehicle and drive off, leaving the woman lying.
Equally as shocking, pedestrians, motorists and a bus driver also ignore the woman.
Sinn Fein Councillor Barney O’Hagan has described the officers’ behaviour as “shocking,” stating they showed a “complete failure in their duty of care” to the public.
He added: “They left this woman on the roadway, putting herself and road users at risk.
“This matter requires investigating and the officers concerned, at the very least, need additional training on public safety.”
Cllr O’Hagan concluded: “They had a responsibility to take her to a safe area.”
