A proposal which would have seen the union flag flown on designated days at Derry City Council’s headquarters has been rejected by MLAs.
A proposal by the Alliance Party’s Anna Lo that the flag be raised at all council headquarters throughout the North was defeated in a late-night vote at Stormont.
An Ulster Unionist proposal to make the flying of the union flag compulsory on all council buildings on designated days was also defeated.
Another UU proposal to fly the union flag at Belfast City Hall on every day of the year was also rejected.
Sinn Féin and the SDLP had submitted a valid petition of concern on four amendments concerning flags, which caused them to be taken on a cross-community vote.
