Plans to develop a multi-pound incinerator plant at Strathfoyle on the outskirts of Derry have been dumped.
The North West Regional Waste Managment Group (NWRWMG)’s said it was binning the plans for the £500m gasification plant due to uncertainty over its delivery.
NWRWMG took the decision after the group representing of seven councils across the North West had recommended the development should not go ahead to avoid huge EU fines over coming decades.
Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan, who said he believed the plant had the potential to make a major long term contribution to the region’s waste management requires, said the committee had made the “correct decision.”
He said: “I believe that the NWRWMG has had to bow to circumstances totally outside its control.
“I am confident, however, that in light of the major challenges which have been presented to both the deliverability and value for money of the project, that the Joint Committee has made the correct decision.”
Local group Zero Waste North West (ZWNW) had vigorously campaigned against the development of the plant.
