The placing of three new dog waste bins, along with signage, in The Fountain in Derry has been welcomed by Kyle Thompson, chairperson of the Foyle branch of UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party).
Mr Thompson said during a public meeting with UKIP Foyle representatives in January, many residents complained dog owners from outside the area were coming in to estate and failing to lift dog waste after letting their pets defecate on the pathway between the school and the City Walls.
He added: “This was a major problem as children were using the area as well.”
Mr Thompson revealed, following the meeting, he contacted the City Engineers Department of the City Council and accompanied council official Dessie McChrystal on a walk through the estate which resulted in new bins and signage being secured.
He added: “These were not only for the main problem area but also for two other areas in The Fountain.”
However, Mr Thompson expressed concern as some dog owners continued to ignore the waste bins.
He said: “I have noticed a reduction in the amount of dog dirt, but it has been reported to me that some dog owners are still not using the bins provided.”
Mr Thompson concluded: “UKIP Foyle would call on all dog owners to be responsible and lift their dogs’ dirt and use the facilities now provided.”
