Kevin Deery has been released by Derry City after spending 13 years at the club.
The former captain, who last year celebrated his testimonial season at the Brandywell – during which he made nine appearances – had hoped to be given a new contract by Candy Stripes boss Roddy Collins after recovering from knee surgery.
Deery, best known for his stunning two goals in City’s memorable 5-1 European away win over Gretna in 2006, took to social media last night to reveal he had left the club he joined in 2001.
In posts on Facebook, he criticised new Brandywell boss at how he had been treated considering he had taken part in pre-season training with the club.
He also said: “That’s me officially released from the club I spent my whole career with.
“I have had some amazing times at Derry City but all things have to come to an end.
“Thanks to all the fellow players I have played with throughout my time at the club.”
Derry said they were disappointed at the midfielder’s reaction, especially since he had never been managed by Collins.
Deery, who captained the Candy Stripes to FAI Cup glory in 2012, underwent surgery on a knee injury last year and had trained with City during the pre-season.
Following his surgery in November, Derry had not appointed a successor to Declan Devine and the Creggan man harboured hopes he would remain involved with his home town club, either in a playing or coaching capacity.
He said apart from his wife and two children, playing for Derry City had always been “one of the most important things in my life.”
He added: “I’m a Derry lad, born and bred and nothing comes close to lining out for my home town team, especially at the Brandywell.
“But I am confident that I still have plenty to offer the club in the future.”
Deery began playing with Derry City in 2001 and had been part of five League Cup winning squads and scored in the 6-1 2008 final win over Wexford Youths.
He was also part of Derry’s FAI Cup wins in 2002, 2006 and 2012.
He gained legendary status with City fans when he scored twice in Derry’s historic 5-1 hammering of Scottish club Gretna in a Uefa Cup third-round qualifier at Fir Park in August 2006.
Both strikes were from 30 yards but it was his second, a spectacular angled drive, that many believe is the greatest goal ever scored by a Derry City player.
