The lives of children and pedestrians are being put at risk by speeding motorists in the Culmore area of Derry.
Concern has been expressed about the number of motorists ignoring the 30 mph speed limit.
Appealing to drivers to slow down, Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan was speaking after complaints that many were disregarding the speed restriction in the Point Road area.
Cllr Hassan said: “I would urge motorists to slow down whilst travelling through the area and to adhere to the speed limits in place.”
“The Culmore area has grown considerably in recent years and residents with young families have expressed their concerns to me over speeding cars in the Point area which pose an obvious risk to children and other pedestrians.”
Cllr Hassan concluded: “If people are driving at a sensible speed there is far more chance of the driver stopping in time than if they are driving at speed. Speed is one of the biggest contributing factors to road deaths in Ireland.”
