The Housing Executive and Housing Associations have been called to get together with the developers to “strategically” plan ahead of the development of the H2 site at Buncrana Road on the outskirts of Derry.
The call has come from Cllr Tony Hassan, Sinn Fein’s spokesperson on housing, who said the development had the potential to bring hundreds of new homes and construction jobs.
Cllr Hassan said with Article 40 to be signed off on in the next few months by the Planning Service, he believed there needed to be a proactive approach and that the planners and developers in Derry should be meeting now to “brainstorm ideas.”
Cllr Hassan added: “I am aware that one Housing Association has already meet with a developer and where interested to explore the development of social housing.
“But there is a need for a much bigger round table discussion with the Housing Associations, Housing Executive in the city to strategically plan ahead.
“One key area of the city that I have been campaigning for the development of is the H2 site on the Buncrana Road.”
Cllr Hassan concluded;` “This could be a catalyst project for Derry as well as providing hundreds of new homes it would bring work to the construction industry taking people off the dole; it would help regenerate and bring investment to the area and also help keep people from leaving the city to find work elsewhere.”
