A former Mayor of Derry has called for play parks to be included the housing development proposed for the former St Peter’s High School site in the city.
The site, located on the edge of the Creggan estate, had been plagued by vandals since the school closed in June last year.
The residential development will comprise of six four bedroom houses, 63 three bedroom houses, 30 two bedroom houses, 28 one bedroom apartments plus new access and associated site works.
The announcement by Enrivonment Mark H Durkan that planning permission has been granted for the scheme has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Cllr Kevin Campbell, who had led calls for the former school site to be re-developed.
However, he said it was “very important” the local community be consulted about the development which, he added, should include children’s play parks.
Cllr Campbell said: “Following the recent fires at St Peter’s school I publicly called for the building to be demolished as quickly as possible on health and safety grounds and that a public consultation should take place around what the future held for such a large site, one of those plans being to build over 100 new homes on the site by Apex Housing.
“I welcome today’s announcement that over 100 homes are to be built there.”
The former Mayor concluded: “It’s also very important that the local community is fully consulted on this and that there is the provision for the likes play parks in those plans.”
