The go-ahead has been given for houses to be built on the site of the former St Peter’s High School in Derry.
The site, located on the edge of the Creggan estate, had been plagued by vandals since the school closed in June last year.
The residential development will comprise of six four bedroom houses, 63 three bedroom houses, 30 two bedroom houses, 28 one bedroom apartments plus new access and associated site works.
The announcement comes as the SDLP in the city called for 4,000 new homes to be built in the city to tackle its housing crisis.
At present, it is estimated there are almost 3.300 people waiting to be housed in Derry.
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan, who recommended planning approval for social housing development at former St Peter’s site, described the moved as “good news” for Derry.
He said the “vitally important” project would provide much needed social housing in an area that had been identified as having an “acute shortage.”
He added: “It will regenerate this former school site into an attractive area for people to live in and enjoy and provide an employment boost during the construction phase.
“This brings the total to over 300 dwellings for social housing in this part of the city as my Department recently gave planning approval for 180 dwellings on the adjacent site, also for social housing use.”
