Residents in the Waterside area have been called on to take extra security measures following a number of incidents in which homes and vehicles have been targeted by criminals.
The call comes from Sinn Fein local election candidate Christopher Jackson who wwas speaking after the latest incident in which a car was taken from outside a house in the Tamneymore area of Top of the Hill and later found burnt out at Southway on the cityside.
Mr Jackson said: “I would like to make an urgent appeal to residents in the Waterside area to a take few extra security measures following a number of opportunist break-ins and attempted thefts of cars in the Top of the Hill area over the past few nights.
“I am also aware that up to a dozen cars have been targeted in Killfennan and Knightsbridge alone. That’s a staggering figure for such a small area.
“It’s important that car owners lock their cars doors when they go into their homes. And that garages and outhouses are secured.”
He concluded: “I would urge extra vigilance from residents over the next few weeks and if they see anyone acting suspiciously to alert their neighbours and to contact police straight away.”
