All roads lead to Co Tyrone today for the Omagh Half Marathon which will see hundreds of competitors from this year’s Derry Marathon take part.
The event fits ideally into the training schedule for those entered for the 1 June event.
Over 2,500 runners are expected at the starting line today for the 25th annual running of the event, the third race in the Pure Running-ChampionChip Ireland Half Marathon Series, after successful events in Newry and Larne.
Pre-race favourite is Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) whose impressive performance last year saw him claim victory in a new course record and personal best of 1:04:46.
The win sparked an excellent run of results for the England based Northern Ireland man which included wins at the Titanic 10k, Laganside 10k, Belfast City Half Marathon and numerous top outings on the track, the most notable of which was a 13:58 clocking over 5,000m at a BMC event in Manchester (England).
The Derry challenge for honours is expected to come from Stephen Connor (Foyle Valley AC).
In the ladies race, reigning champion Ann-Marie McGlynn (Lifford AC) will prove hard to beat if she decides to defend her title.
Ann-Marie was a convincing winner last year, after running 1:20:03, and like Scullion, she went on to enjoy an extremley successful year, culminating in her selection for the Ireland team for the European Cross Country Championships in December last.
More recently, she claimed a superb fourth place finish at the Armagh International 3k last month and won the Airtricity 10k in 35:16.
Sarah Kivelehan (City of Derry AC) is also expected to feature prominently.
