Derry athlete Cathal McLaughlin produced the run of his life to finish third in the 1,500 metres at the World Masters Championships held in Budapest, Hungary.
It is an outstanding achievement by the City of Derry Track Club member who last year had the honour of being the first athlete to represent the club in open competition following its affiliation to Athletics NI.
His World Masters achievement caps a remarkable 13 months for the Derry runner, who set an Irish Indoor M45 record for the 1,500 metres in February last year which he broke when he was sixth in the European Masters’ in San Sebastian the following month.
He also brought home two silver medals from the National outdoor championships in Tullamore.
He also got to lead Northern Ireland M45 squad when they competed against the four other home countries at the British and Irish Cross Country Championships in Cardiff.
