A number of private landlords in Derry are putting lives at risk with dangerous practices designed to cut costs of maintenance work, it has been claimed.
Emmet Doyle, SDLP candidate in the Moor ward in next month’s local election, said he had been approached by a number of residents living in apartments who had their wooden windows permanently shut with silicone.
Mr Doyle said: “I am appalled at the state some landlords have left their properties in and the risk they are putting their tenants in by cutting costs.
“In one incident I was contacted about, a landlord had sealed wooden windows with silicone rather than fixing them, leaving the tenant unable to ventilate a flat, and without adequate fire exit access.”
Mr Doyle said this kind of practice was “totally shameful” and if the worst should happen, could cost lives.
He added: “My message to landlords who think they can cut corners is simple, treat your tenants with the respect they deserve and carry out repairs in a responsible manner.
“I will be reporting landlords to the relevant estate agents and if needs be, the Health and Safety Executive.”
Mr Doyle concluded: “If anyone has concerns about their privately rented home I would welcome their contact and I will do all I can to help.”
